The Blood Divine

"Rise Pantheon Dreams"

(Peaceville)

by: Alex S. Johnson

A kind of Greatest Hits and rarities package for this formerly Filthy crew, Rise Pantheon Dreams shows off the deeply romantic vision shared by the Brothers Ryan and writer/vocalist Darren White. Some of the best tracks on this release come straight from BD's superlative 1997 album, Mystica -- "As Rapture Fades," with its lilting acoustic thread, and the standout "Sensual Ecstasy." Striking every note on the tonal spectrum like spatter from a radiant crystal, the collection includes the unreleased "Revolt" with its grindcore fuzz crunch, and "Wilderness," a solemn orchestral build-up recalling, like "Aureole" (also presented live), Cradle songs of yore. White's gruffly mournful vox, which contrasts nicely with the rainbow evanescence and psychedelic showers of the band, evokes Nosferatu singer Dominic LaVey, Robert Smith and Aaron Stainthorpe from My Dying Bride. A stirring mix of tunes that goes great with rainy days, red wine and old loves recalled in tranquility.
