SUGARCOMA

"Becoming Something Else"

(Koch Records)

by Jonathan Mariante

Sugarcoma are a hard rocking three girl (or should that be "grrl"?), one guy band who play like they're having a sugar rush! They really kick out the jams, playing rough and rowdy punk rock (with tinges of metal and grunge), full of aggression and angst! Singer Jessica Mayers is a tough and aggressive singer, but can also be smooth and sexy at the same time. The rest of the band (guitarist Claire Simson, bassist Heidi McEwen, and male drummer James Cuthbert) fire on all eights all the way, tearing their way through the album's fourteen songs! Nothing here but pure raw energy, no frills, from beginning to end! The band also plays very well and is a tight little unit. In a time when much of what passes for punk rock is really just pop music in disguise, it's very refreshing to hear a band like this, who does it like it's supposed to be done! If you're in a punk kind of mood, check out Sugarcoma. They'll knock you into a coma!
