Rhapsody

"Live In Canada 2005-The Dark Secret"
(SPV/Magic Circle Music)
by Jonathan Mariante

This is Rhapsody's first live album. At last we can hear what they can do on stage. This was recorded live in Montreal, in June of '05, while Rhapsody toured with Manowar. Rhapsody play their bombastic, grandiose trademark style of "film score metal" to an audience of enthusiastic Canuck metalheads. Rhapsody's rather unique sound is melodic power/speed metal fused with influences from classical, opera, folk, and medieval music, with Tolkien/Wagner inspired lyrics about warriors, dragons, and magic swords. It's like Manowar, Blind Guardian, and Queen meeting for a night at the opera after a day at a renaissance fair. The band sounds just as epic onstage as they do on their studio recordings, blazing their way through eleven songs picked from their previous releases, including "Unholy Warcry", "Wisdom Of The Kings", "Dawn Of Victory", "March Of The Swordmaster", and "Emerald Sword". The band are certainly very talented and they play up a storm. Fabio Leone has one golden set of pipes, and the rest of the band are very skilled musicians. On one of the songs, "Erian's Mystical Rhymes", which lasts about fifteen minutes, each member is allowed a chance to show off their skills. They sound great live and give it a hundred percent! This album will be a milestone in Rhapsody's career, as live albums often are, and is a testament to the band's talent. For those who haven't experienced Rhapsody live, this "Dark Secret" shows what great live band they are. A Rhapsody concert is sure to be an experience like no other! A DVD is also included with the CD but it is really just a preview for a full length DVD Rhapsody will be releasing soon. The DVD also includes the whole live recording again, on audio only. I'm not sure what the point in that is, but the upcoming DVD looks like it will be a treat for Rhapsody fans!
