Eternal Flight"Positive Rage" When we think of music from France, the first thing that often comes to mind is guys in berets playing accordions, and not anything close to heavy metal. However, France has produced a handful of quality metal bands over the years, and Eternal Flight is that country's latest offering. They are a progressive/power metal band, like Hammerfall meets Dream Theater. Singer Gerard Fois (ex-Dream Child), in fact, sounds a great deal like Hammerfall's Joacim Cans. On the power side of things, they play a lot of full speed ahead gallopers with classic power metal style riffs, such as "The Masks Will Fall", "Guardians", and "Morphoenix". Flight are certainly a metal band, but also very progressive, with heavy use of keyboards (very Dream Theater), sophisticated melodies and arrangements, and classical influence. One song in particular, "The Moon King", is very progressive, with a lot of Yes influence, and it moves back and forth between metal riffs and being a more prog tune. We also have the epic number "Back In The Light", more Dream Theater influenced songs like "All We Are" and "Real" (just for the record, "All We Are" is not a cover of the Warlock classic), and a ballad in "Secret Place". The band is certainly very talented, and have made a progressive/power metal album of epic proportions here. It's clear a lot of effort went into this. The songwriting and musicianship are excellent, and the band has a unique style. I think they've raised the bar for progressive metal just a tad, and they have what it takes to be in the same league as prog metal masters like Dream Theater. Don't hate this band because they're French! But since this country's been on a "hate France" trip for a couple of years, and calling French fries Freedom Fries and all that shit, well, maybe Eternal Flight have invented a new genre of metal-Freedom Metal!
