Hirax

"The New Age Of Terror"
(Mausoleum Records)
by Jonathan Mariante

The classic thrash just keeps on coming! Hirax are an underground thrash sensation from the 80s who have returned for another round! Just when you thought it was safe! "NAOT" is a relentless thrash attack from start to finish, sounding just like it's from the dark underbelly of the 80s. These guys rip through the album as if possessed! The music is fast, furious, and aggressive, but it is also played with skill and precision. Guitarists Dave Watson and Glenn Rogers play with speed, fire, and technicality, while singer Katon W. De Pena has a strong, gutsy voice, and drummer Jorge Lacobellis and bassist Angelo Espino are a rhythm section from hell, pounding it out like a machine gun, even dabbling into death metal style blast beat drumming from time to time. This, however, is the only hint of Hirax coming out of the 80s, as they stick to their guns all the way, dishing out pure, uncorrupted, old school style thrash metal, just like it was meant to be. All these bands around today that THINK they're metal, that people THINK are metal, better watch out! Hirax are back to show 'em how it's REALLY done!
