1349

"Liberation"

(Candlelight Music)

by: Martha Hughes

I met these Norwegian blasters at Wacken in 2001. They gave me their demo and when I returned home, I listened to it and was immediately impressed. This is the kind of black metal the dark world needs. There are no keyboards, no bimbo fronting the band, winking at horny teen-aged boys showing off her newly pierced belly button. This is fast and extreme. At first, the comparison could be made to Swedish blacksters Marduk, in that 1349 is ripping fast, but then the comparisons end. For parts of a few songs I heard familiar chords and rhythms, but just when I thought I figured a song out, it surprised me with something like the sounds of a far-off battle, or a vocal technique or a drum change-up I wasn't prepared for. 1349 has its black boots in the first wave of black metal, but has its sword in a new never surrendering world.
