Every now and then, a band
will come along that gives the music scene a much needed kick in the teeth.
I've been waiting for that band and it has arrived in the form of Luxt,
a female fronted band that's self described as "cyber voodoo rock." If
that's what they wanna call it, fine, I won't argue with 'em. They've
got my vote. Personally, I only need a single word to describe what I
just heard...EXCEPTIONAL! When I first heard "American Beast," I thought
it sounded like a combination of Guano Apes and Kittie because certain
elements in their music brought those two bands to mind. After giving
it another listen, I started having second thoughts. Guano Apes and Kittie
are excellent bands and I admire them both. But, I didn't think it was
fair to compare Luxt to them...or anyone else for that matter. Why? Because,
yes, they have a sound and style that's all their own and I think the
impact they'll make on people will be a lot deeper. You see, this isn't
music that you just listen to...it drags you in and it holds you there,
reaching the deepest part of your inner being. They're loud, they're aggressive
and they've got a certain mystery about them. It's like, you listen to
the album and you're impressed. But, once it's over, you find yourself
wondering what it is that you just heard. So, you hit the repeat button
on your CD player and you go though it again and it knocks you for a loop
a second time. You really need to let this album grow on you. Don't form
your opinion with your first listen. Take it all in a number of times
and allow yourself to really experience the music. Once you've done that,
you'll understand just how good this release is. I feel it's safe to say
that Luxt is gonna be the next big thing, which would be the best thing
that could happen in the music world. A brilliant album from an exceptional
band. Album of the year for 2003? Well, they've got my vote! http://www.luxt.com
