New Mexican Erection

"Co-Dependent"
(Nasty Cactus Music)
by Jonathan Mariante

Quite a clever name this band has-made even more clever when you take the first letter of each word, you get "NME" (Get it? Enemy!). But, as one of their songs is titled, "What's In A Name"? It's the music that counts, so let's get to that. The Erection boys play some hard ass Pantera/Crowbar style metal, tough as concrete, a bit on the sludgy side, very aggressive, with Dimebag-style riffing galore, rough'n'raw vocals, and plenty of angst to boot! It's nothing that hasn't been done before, but it makes up for in ass kicking what it lacks in originality, and the band are fairly good players. They ram it hard like a jackhammer all the way through! The one thing they do that's a bit strange is they include a hidden bonus track that's almost twenty minutes long, and the first half of this is made up of a bunch of weird ass sound effects, including (what sounds like) jangling keys, the guys testing microphones, and spacey, spooky synthesizer noises that sound like they're from a cheezy sci fi/horror flick. Then, after putting the listener through that for over ten minutes, they finally play a song (title unknown), that is like the others on the album. Weird, very weird. They must have had some extra studio time, or maybe just some extra time on their hands, period. But it gave me something to write about! And aside from that little quirk, this is a pretty good album.
