Marty Friedman
By Paul Autry Former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman doesn't really have anything left to prove. He's got a loyal following and they know that he's one hell of a guitar player. So, what's the deal with doing an instrumental album? I would ask that question because my opinion is this...I believe people who do instrumental albums do so in order to prove to people that their shit doesn't stink. Attitude, ego, self indulgence, take your pick. That's kind of why I'm not too fond of instrumental releases...that and the fact that I just can't seem to get into 'em, be they good or bad. Without lyrics, I feel a song is incomplete. That's just me. I know there's a rather large audience for this style of music. So, what's the scoop on this release? Well, I appreciate the way Marty presents this release. No attitude, no ego, no self indulgent bullshit. It's just a good release that was made/created just to have fun. That's the key word there...fun. Like I said, Marty doesn't have to prove anything to anybody, we know he can play and we know how well he can play to. So, there's really no pressure here. He can make the kind of album that he would enjoy making and, once completed, he can present it to you for your entertainment. That's it, case closed, done deal. Seeing as I'm not a musician myself, I can't pick an album such as this apart and say, well, Marty's doing this, Marty's doing that and so on and so forth. I won't even go there. But, I will say this...it's got an excellent production...one of the best I ever heard when it comes to instrumental music...and there's some really cool stuff on here. It's not stale or boring. Stand out tracks are "Ripped," "It's The Unreal Thing" and "Gimme A Dose." http://www.martyfriedman.com |
