The Gathering
"Souvenirs"

by Paul Autry

First of all, maybe it's just me. But, I can't seem to understand why this band is considered a rock band. Okay, sure, maybe they have their moments. I see more pop than rock though. They actually remind me of a band called The Blue Up, which was also more pop than rock. The press/bio sheet uses the term "triprock," which I guess I can agree with. But, again, there's a lot I just don't get. They say this band has a dark sound. Maybe my opinion of "dark" is something different, who knows.

Emotional music...yes, I can agree with that term, no problem there. Beautiful, experimental...organic and electronic sounds that go hand in hand with more psychedelic film music. Again, I can agree with that. Yeah, that would sum up what I would say about this release. But, why bother with all the terms or descriptions? I'd rather enjoy the album for what it is, which is a mighty fine musical recording. It gives you a sense of peace, a feeling of bliss. Hell, it's pretty damn relaxing if you ask me. This is an album that I would enjoy listening to at night...which is maybe why they say it has a dark sound. I just couldn't see blasting this one around noon while I'm sitting here on the computer doing my thing.

That's actually how I first listened to this album and I just couldn't get into it. But, late in the evening, when I was crashed out on the couch, I put this on and I took it all in and it was a magical experience. Maybe The Gathering isn't a band that you should try to understand. Maybe they're a band that you simply enjoy. http://www.gathering.nl http://www.theendrecords.com
