Pro Pain

"Run For Cover"
(Spitfire Records)
by Jonathan Mariante

Metalcore godfathers Pro Pain's newest album is a collection of covers, of classic metal and hardcore/punk songs that the band like and were inspired by. They cover songs by Slayer, Motorhead, Celtic Frost, Discharge, GBH, Agnostic Front, Sepultura, Life Of Agony, Black Flag, and the Crumbsuckers (bassist/vocalist Gary Meshil's previous band), among others. They do a very good job covering these classics, delivering in the usual Pro Pain way; fast, furious, aggressive, raw, hard as nails, and abrasive. No frills, just pure, classic Pro Pain all the way! Their playing is as tight as the security at Fort Knox, and their music just kicks the shit out of you! And in some cases, they kick the shit out of the original versions of these songs! (No disrespect meant to the originals or their respective artists, of course) One that I was particularly impressed by was their cover of the Slayer classic, "South Of Heaven". It's a near-perfect copy of the original, note for note, and it's hard to tell the difference between the two! I hope the Slayer dudes hear this, they'd be proud! It certainly does them justice, and that is true of all the songs they've covered on this album. They've done a great job here. As I said, in some cases, they out do the originals! If you're unfamiliar with Pro Pain, I would recommend checking out some of their original material first, but Pro Pain fans should love this!
