Firewind

"Forged By Fire"
(Magick/Century Media)
by Jonathan Mariante

Firewind are hot metal band who play pure, straightforward heavy metal, in the vein of Primal Fear, polished and melodic, but hard, fast, and heavy as well. This is their second album and it packs a wallop! The nucleus of the band is founder and guitar wizard Gus G., who has made a name for himself in recent years, playing in several bands, including Swedish power metal outfit Dream Evil. He is a hell of a guitarist, playing some blazing work all through the album, very influenced by Yngwie Malmsteen and other such virtuosos. In fact, on the instrumental track, "Feast Of The Savages", Gus shows off his six string skills to the max, and duets with former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman and Bob Katsionis. Dream Theater's James Murphy also plays a solo on one song. Most of the other songs are full throttle power metal anthems, such as "Kill To Live", "Beware The Beast", "Tyranny", and "Burn In Hell". The album closes with a ballad, the Scorpions-influenced "Land Of Eternity". "Perished In Flames" is a slower-moving tune with a pounding beat, sounding like a hybrid of "When The Levee Breaks", "Iron Man", and "Sad But True", and the song slams into high gear at the end, becoming a speedy neck-breaker. "Hate World Hero" is also a little on the slower side, similar to Iron Maiden's "Stranger In A Strange Land". Firewind delivers 100% pure METAL! Nothing more, nothing less! And they know how to crank it out!
