EMPYRIUM

"Weiland (3CD/02)"

(Prophecy Productions)

by: Martha Hughes

To call Empyrium metal would not be accurate. To call them amazing and intensely provocative would be more on the money. This CD set is a bit doomy, but nothing along the lines of say, Cathedral. It is classically based and steeped in atmospheric tones. This 3-CD set may be my very favorite of the year. Empyrium is from Germany. Unfortunately, I can't say much more because everything is written and sung in German. The acoustic guitars, the piano, the cello, the deep-breathed male vocals, and subtle growls; it all conjures nightmares from fairytales. Wolves wandering thick-wooded hills and castles guarded by red dragons haunt the band's music. This is the music for early mornings, before the sun rises, when our imaginations are at their peaks. I think back to our ancestors and feel the terror in their hearts at the sounds of the night. Somber and dark, Empyrium never compromise for the sake of commercial melodies. Recordings like this are found only a few times in an era. It may be difficult to find, though I don't know, I had to discover whilst in Europe.
