Leaves' Eyes

"Lovelorn"
(Napalm Records)
by Paul Autry

"Lovelorn" is an interesting release. The music is simply beautiful...and beautiful is a word that I don't use too often. In this case, there's no other way to describe it. It's also heavy without being brutal, if you can imagine that. It's a well thought out album to say the least. Leaves' Eyes have created a heavenly atmosphere here and the way the music pulls you in is almost magical. My only real complaint is when the death metal style vocals are mixed with those of former Theatre Of Tragedy vocalist Liv Kristine Espenaes Krull. In my opinion, it wasn't needed. It upsets the whole vibe of the album and it does nothing but distract the listener. The only place it really worked was during the begining of track eight, "Temptation." That vocal style should've been left out of the rest of the song because, once again, it doesn't really work well and it wasn't needed. Stand out tracks are "Norwegian Lovesong" and "Into Your Light." There's a multimedia section featured here as well. You can pop the disc into your computer and listen to each song with the lyrics right in front of you, which I thought was really cool. There's also a video for "Into Your Light," which was a real pleasure to watch. It's good to see a band give a little extra to the fans. Gotta give 'em credit for that. Anyway, as I said..."Lovelorn" is an interesting release and if you're looking for something different and original, this release might satisfy your hunger. Give it a listen...you might like what you hear.
