Teasing Lulu'Festival of Blues', Spitz, London. 3rd February, 2005 by Dominic Toogood
It's all in a nights work for, surely, the next big thing, Teasing Lulu. Infectious punk pop and an attitude to match, these girls swaggered onto the stage of this intimate venue, revved up and not at all abashed in belting out just a sprinkling of their fresh and bouncing repertoire in which one could drown in the potential hits! High praise? These girls deserve it and more. Although one wondered what they were doing on the playlist of a blues festival having supported such punk greats as The Damned and Dead Kennedys in the past, but was I ever happy they were. Yes, all the obvious comparisons will come up between these girls, (Lucy Dalton on lead guitar and vocals, Louisa Carr on bass and backing vox), and the likes of The Donnas, The Faders, even The Bangles before they met Prince, but they blow them all away. Punk chicks in rock stances delivering foot tapping, high energy tunes, it doesn't get much better than this. True, maybe many before them have had their music watered down by record company pressure or a desire for higher sales but these girls, (we must mention a most capable male drummer too), seem to have their stiletto's firmly on the ground and are steadfast in their desire to bring their own brand of snarling, street wise punk rock to the masses. With bass riffs that make your hair stand on end and a buzzing lead guitar that defaces all chords that dare stand it's way the girls seem to have it all. Looks, sense of humour, (check out song titles such as 'Don't Want to be Your Waitress'), and a rocking sound and attitude it beggars belief that a record company has yet to snap them up. With Strangler, punk legend and fan J.J. Burnel in attendance Teasing Lulu had a lot to live up to tonight?... frankly, they blew us all away.
