Hard Talk

Break the Silence

by Don Sill

After last summers Warped Tour performances and a stint on this past fall's Vans Off The Wall Tour, Break The Silence have been winning over a solid fan base earning their bones within hardcore and punk circles. The Chicago-based metalcore outfit dropped their debut album off Hopeless Records, NEAR LIFE EXPERIENCE, this past February, and are confident that kids will dig their intense heavy style which blends the fury of hardcore with punk melodies. "It's a very energetic CD," says guitarist Dan Precision, "it's very heavy and at the same time melodic. It's got it's fair share of screaming but also has it's fair share of melodies and harmonies and stuff to really keep peoples ears working." - Break The Silence, who also includes Dan Winetercorn, Brian Phee, jay Gronwick and Mike Ford, gave ballbuster a call from the road and Dan Precision told us about their latest adventure.

YOU GUYS ARE IN ARIZONA RIGHT NOW?
Yeah, Phoenix

AND HOW'S THAT GOING?
Well, so far pretty good. There's been some small shows, but it seems like we're getting a really good response. Even though the turnouts aren't huge people really seem to be getting into what we're doing and that's awesome.

YEAH, YOU'RE WINNING THEM OVER
Yeah. We're selling merchandise here and there and what's cool is when people wanna buy the CD. It's cool when they want tee-shirts but when they wanna buy the CD to me that means that they like the music and wanna hear more, ya know.

TELL ME ABOUT LIFE ON THE ROAD, MUST BE SOME CRAZY STORIES
Oh man, the worst was when the started on our van went out on us. That a fiasco because we were in someplace called Wallard, Texas. We were going from Houston to Austin and we just stopped at a gas station and the thing just wouldn't start up again.

THAT SUCKS, BRO
Yeah. We already knew that the starter was a little weird because it already acted up on us once, so this was at three in the morning and we were stranded there for about 15 hours. We didn't wanna call AAA or anything like that

WHY NOT?
Well, for one thing we didn't have it, [Laughs] and we didn't wanna get anybody to tow it because it would cost us a fortune. So we ended up going to a parts store and getting the starter ourselves and trying to put it. We had it working and then not working. It turned out that the part store gave us a bad starter and we had to make like four trips to this damn part store. So, the whole thing took 15 hours and believe it or not we just made it to our show in Austin and we were all tired but it all worked out in the end. [Laughs]

[Laughs] AND ONLY IN 14 HOURS
[Laughs] well yeah, but we made it happen. Thanks to our drummer, [Mike Ford] he really did a good job.

COOL. NOW WHEN YOU GUYS GET TO THE GIG, HOW DO YOU PREPARE?
It really depends, you know. But after we get our equipment there and set up then I like to just stretch and get some energy going right before we play. I'll jump around a bit and get some blood flowing so I'm ready for the stage.

WHAT'S THE MAIN THING YOU REALLY WANT PEOPLE TO WALK AWAY WITH AFTER SEEING YOU PLAY?
Hopefully, we want people have a good energetic feeling and be like, "wow, that was a really good and really cool." We want kids to walk away feeling something and relate to what we're doing and maybe it'll help apply something positive to their lives.

WHAT'S THE ULTIMATE GOAL?
The ultimate goal? Well, besides getting our music out there and having people enjoying us, it's if we can do this and sustain a living off of it, that would be ultimate. Because not only are we doing it, living our dream, but we're able to survive doing it. See, there's a lot of bands that are really awesome, but they can only do this for a short amount of time and then they can't keep up because it's just not happening monetarily wise and that sucks. I hate that part of the music business, the money part, it's all based on money and I don't want it to be I just want to go out there and play my music. But, based on that you have to survive somehow, so if we can do that then that'll be the most ultimate thing.
