Marillion
"Marbles On The Road"
(MVD)
by Paul Autry

Uh...okay...well...we have a live concert performance here. "Marbles On The Road" is a live presentation of Marillion's critically acclaimed album, "Marbles." Critically acclaimed, huh? Yeah...that's what it said on the back of the DVD. So, I guess I'll believe it even though I don't quite understand it...and I say that because this release put me to sleep. I think at this point, I would find Barry Manilow more interesting than this band....and I'm no Barry Manilow fan either. I'm watching this release, there's a rather large audience, they're going crazy for what they're hearing and I just don't see...or should I say hear...the attraction. I had to get a fresh cup of coffee to keep me awake...and it didn't work too well. I mean, it's a great show as far as the way it's presented and all. But, the music, which one might label as progressive, did nothing for me. I started hittin' the fast foward button on my remote. I figured I would find something that would turn me on. Nope...sorry. I went through the entire show with my finger on that button and, once it was over, I couldn't wait to get it out of my DVD player and watch something else. Sad to say, I had to check out the bonus features as well. There was a video for "You're Gone" and "Don't Hurt Yourself," both of which didn't do anything for me. About the only thing I was really interested in was the EPK for the "Marbles" album. I figured it would give me a better understanding of what this band was all about. I don't know how long I watched that...a few minutes maybe. Finally, I had enough. It was time to move on to something else. All I have to say is that, from what I've read, it would seem that Marillion has a loyal following, which is a good thing for any band. If you happen to be one of those loyal people, hey, this release is for you...and probably only you. Maybe a few new people will join the club, more power to 'em. It's just not my cup of tea.
