Queen The best, most famous, and most important part of the legendary career of Queen is gone over in this documentary. It is a very detailed and interesting retrospective look at that period of the band, which includes rare live footage of the band performing their most famous songs, and several well known journalists and music experts discussing the band's history, from the very beginning, and Queen's musical style and their impact and influence on rock music. They talk about Queen's albums and songs in detail, commenting on what made the band unique, as well as the varying qualities and styles of each song and record. Guitarist/journalist Simon Bradley talks in detail about Brian May's guitar style, the techniques and equipment he used (including the guitar Brian designed himself), and how that contributed to Queen's musical style, and helped make it what it is. He even gives a few demonstrations, and goes over the unique qualities of Brian's playing. Of course there is also much discussion of Freddy Mercury and his style as a singer and a showman, and how Queen would not have been Queen without him. They also talk about Queen's talent and uniqueness, and how changing musical climates and trends affected the band very little, if at all; in fact the band would often take advantage of the latest "flavor of the month". They would take that trendy style and make it their own, by writing a song based on that style, doing it very well, and creating a big hit. An example discussed is "Another One Bites The Dust", which is very influenced by disco, but Queen took that style and used it in their own special way, thus creating one of their biggest hits. This DVD gives a very good look at Queen's history, and is very informative and entertaining. It examines very closely the band's career and music, sometimes putting it under a microscope and picking apart each detail of each song or album. Queen were such a talented band, making such unique music and using so many different styles, that there is no choice but to study it carefully. Plus the band have had a very interesting career and made such a big impact on rock and roll. There has never been another band like Queen and never will be. "Under Review" does them justice. Queen fans and rock enthusiasts should find this fascinating. And if you're looking to test your Queen knowledge and have a little fun, a Queen quiz is included as a bonus item. |
