Hard Vision

Thunders, Kane & Nolan
"You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory"
(MVD)
by Paul Autry

Ah, yeah...I'm suprised Arthur Kane & Jerry Nolan even got mentioned on this release because it's all about Johnny Thunders here. It's almost as if it's his show with some hired guns keepin' the beat behind him. I'll give 'em credit though...he's got the rock 'n' roll, Mick Jagger style swagger. He flops around on the stage as if it were built for no one other than himself. Oh, don't get me wrong...I'm not knockin' it or anything. This is just how I see it. Anyway, this performance dates back to January 4th, 1987. Core NYD members Thunders, Kane & Nolan got together for an informal reunion at The Roxy and this was the end result. I assume it's a fan made video. That's what it looks like to me. You get a side view look at the band, with a little zoom here and there. Good quality though. Hell, it's better than some of the shows I've managed to capture on video. So, somebody knew what they were doing. Lucky them...the caught a piece of rock 'n' roll history on film.

The set list...now that's worth talkin' about. What do we have here, about 18 tunes? That sounds about right. It's a nice selection of material. They open with an instrumental, "Pipeline," and, from there, they rock the crowd with tunes like "Blame It On Mom," "Personality Crisis," "I Can Tell," "Dead Or Alive," "Can't Keep My Eyes On You," and, my personal favorite, "I Ain't Superstitious." The middle of the show sees Johnny Thunders doin' some acoustic numbers including the title of this release, "Eve Of Destruction" and The Rolling Stones classic, "Play With Fire." A nice little version of "Green Onions" is thrown into the mix...I like that song. "In The Midnight Hour," that's another one you might know. They save the best for last and that would be "Chinese Rock." God, what a great song that is. I like The Ramones version the best. But, it's always great to hear that one regardless of who's doing it.

You know...they say you can never go home again. Maybe that's true...and maybe you can't put your arms around a memory. But, for 90 minutes, you can bring that memory back to life and enjoy it once more. If you're a fan of Johnny Thunders and/or The New York Dolls, this release will do the trick for you.
