Hard Vision

Godsmack
"Changes"
(Reprise / Universal Records)
by Travis Bain

The Massachusetts hard rock band Godsmack have been around for many years, putting out many albums, and being on many tours winning over audiences and their fans alike. Now, they combine their live show experience, have behind the scenes footage, and background information into the band members.

The documentary was filmed on the Faceless tour, which was almost never produced due to record company politics, but in the end overcame complications. The cameras followed band members Sully Erna, Tony Rombola, Robbie Merrill, and Shannon Larkin everywhere all the time. It starts off while the band is in the pre-production stage of the tour, where they rehearsal in Phoenix, Arizona for six months. They rehearsed the set list and organized the theatrical aspects, such as the lighting, pyrotechnics, and stage décor. There you were shown into the world of Godsmack's team and crew. It gave you a glimpse into the technical side of touring.

Then the film comes full circle and documents while the band is on tour and playing in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, at The Wachovia Arena. There the cameras follow them in their hotel room, backstage, and into their dressing room. It depicts the often not-so-sexy side touring lifestyle such as doing press, signing CDs, and meeting fans, which can be stressful, yet at the same time, come to realize the band parties and has fun doing their job.

This is where the live show experience comes into play. Featured are live performance footage of such hit songs as "Straight out of Line," "Re-Align," and "Whatever." It also goes into the drum battle between Sully Erna and Shannon Larkin, which I found very cool. The DVD translates the audience's reaction and energy perfectly into film. Also, the film tries to go beyond the typical band DVD and public image know as Godsmack, and brings you into their personal lives. You start to learn about their background and how they formed the band. Also, you begin to see how they deal with being on tour while still trying to maintain a normal family life and raising children. This DVD was well done. There is nothing groundbreaking, but is entertaining to watch none the less. This is a definite buy for Godsmack fans to add to their collection.
