Poison
"Seven Days Live"
(Cherry Red Records)
by Paul Autry

Having seen Poison live during the "Flesh & Blood" days and a Bret Michaels solo performance, I'm kind of familiar with the kind of energy that's to be expected during a Poison show. When I saw "Seven Days Live" on the pile of releases I needed to write about, I quickly threw this release into my DVD player because I knew that I would experience nothin' but a good time...and, for the most part, I was right.

This live concert performance was filmed at the world famous Hammersmith Apollo on April 23rd, 1993. Yeah...this is not so old school Poison we're talkin' about here and, of course, we're going back to the "Native Tongue" period, which a lot of people, myself included, have mixed reactions about. The "Native Tongue" album was one that took a long time to grow on me. It's not a favorite. But, at least I can listen to it now without feeling sick to my stomach. I've learned to appreciate this one to a certain degree. Although, after hearing this album, reading numerous articles on the band and watching the video for "Stand," there was one thought in my mind...Richie Kotzen did not belong in Poison. I still feel this way and I doubt my opinion will change anytime soon.

As I was watching this release, I was really impressed with the performance. The only complaint I really have is the fact that out of the fifteen tunes on this release, five of them come from the "Native Tongue" album and, quite honestly, I could've done without those. Sure, you get a healthy dose of classic Poison material such as "Look What The Cat Dragged In," "Talk Dirty To Me," "Unskinny Bop," "Nothin' But A Good Time" and "Good Love." But, there's always room for more. The impression I got from this viewing experience is, once again, Richie Kotzen did not belong in Poison. He managed to keep up with the rest of the band on stage. But, then again, any really good studio musician could've done the same thing.

This was a good show to watch and it gives the viewer a good idea of where Poison was during the "Native Tongue" days and, yeah, I would suggest adding it to your collection, especially if you're a Poison fan. Even if you share my opinion about Richie Kotzen, I would still suggest picking this one up because you won't be disappointed. It's 82 minutes of Poison doing what they do best...rockin' and rollin' in front of a live audience.
