Syd Barrett/Small Faces I decided to do a single review for these two releases because they're pretty much the same and, to be honest with you, I didn't find them to be all that entertaining. That should come as no suprise when you consider the fact that they're unauthorized releases and, in most cases, unauthorized releases usually don't amount to much. There's no input from the people who really matter and, regardless of who you're talking about, if you're not getting an opinion from someone close to the band, their opinion really doesn't carry a lot of weight. Sure, the release might feature some rare footage that's never been available on DVD. But, for the most part, you're only getting a glimpse of that footage. You're not getting the whole, uncut performance, which seems to be the case with these releases. The Syd Barrett release I found interesting. Not because of what was featured. But, the fact that most of the information on this release can be found on Wikipedia. That should tell you something right there. I mean, seriously, I could pick a few of his tunes, offer my opinion in the form of a review. But, you already know his music and, if you're a fan, you should already know most of his history. So, I couldn't really say anything that hasn't been said before and that's the impression I got from this release. Instead of spending 66 minutes waching this release, I could spend about 10 minutes going through the text on the Wikipedia site and come away with the same knowledge. Doesn't say much about the release, does it? On the other hand, even though The Small Faces release is pretty much the same kind of release, it's more interesting to watch because there's a lot more live footage, which seems to be the beauty of it. Also, if I'm not mistaken, this is currently the only Small Faces DVD that's available to the public which, if that's the case, gives this one a more of an edge than the Syd Barrett release. If that's the only DVD that's floating around out there, of course, the fans are gonna pick it up. When it comes to either release, I guess it all boils down to how much of a fan you really are. If you're a hardcore fan who has to have every single thing that's floating around out there, sure, pick 'em up, add 'em to your collection. If you're a casual fan, before you part with your money, you might wanna put a little extra thought into that descision. http://www.chromedreams.co.uk |
