Hard Vision

Cinderella
"In Concert"
(Dead Line)
by Paul Autry

Now, here's a release that's worth gettin' out of bed in the morning for. This is the kind of stuff that I live for. Freakin' Cinderella...hell yeah. I was really into their first two albums back in the day. In fact, I still have 'em in my collection. Only one I don't really listen to is "Heartbreak Station," only because it's the only Cinderella album that I still have on cassette...and I really hate cassette tapes. Ah, that's another story.

Anyway, I was pleased as punch when this release arrived in my mailbox. I've watched it a number of times already and I can't get enough. This is a totally fantastic concert performane. Tom Keiffer struts around the stage with the same swagger as MicK Jagger. Fred Coury seems like he's in his own little world, bangin' on the drums and having a great time. Jeff LaBar is clearly gettin' off on what he's doing and Eric Brittingham's got the hair flyin' and his head banging. This is just an explosive, high energy release.

Now, I could be wrong about this because I don't know what the band was thinkin' when they came up for the set list for this show, which was filmed back in 1991 during the "Heartbreak Station Tour," but, the impression that I got was that it must have been a well thought out selection process because this is not a sloppy show. They kick it off with a little bit of rock 'n' roll, not too hard, not too soft, if you know what I mean. That's the first four tracks, "The More Things Change," "Push Push," "Sick For The Cure" and "Make Your Own Way." Once they get the audience worked up, they switch gears and slam into 'em with a dose of heaviness in the form of "Night Songs," "Back Home Again" and "Somebody Save Me." After that work out, they chill out a bit with "Heartbreak Station" and "Coming Home." They work the crowd up again with "Falling Apart At The Seams," "Love's Got Me Doin' Time," "Love Gone Bad" and the classic, "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" and, after those four tunes, they drive the point home hard with "Nobody's Fool," "Gypsy Road," "Shake Me" and finally, one more for the road, "Shelter Me." I don't know about you. But, to me, that seems like a very well balanced performance, one that's guaranteed to give the audience the best possible experience and I say that because I've seen a number of major concerts in my day...Ozzy Osbourne, White Lion, Tesla, Kiss, Poison, Great White, Dokken and Warrant to name a few and, while each show was good, there was still a feeling that the band could've done more, some more so than others. I won't mention any names. But, some came out and just plain rocked for the whole show, some went mellow in the middle of their performance for way too long, some didn't play long enough, some didn't even do the tunes that people expect to hear. But, during the course of seventeen songs, you get a good feel for who Cinderella was at the time and what they were all about. Seriously...it doesn't get any better than this. I wish I would have experienced this tour in person instead of years later in the privacy of my own home. Better late than never I guess.

Final thoughts? Well, if you buy one concert DVD this year, make sure it's this one. You won't be disappointed.
