The Michael Schenker Group
"Live In Tokyo 1997"
(MVD)
by Paul Autry

Ah, man...it's a great time to be a Michael Schenker fan, that's for sure. The last time we got a DVD to talk about, it was the fantastic "World Wide Live 2004," which was a high quality, fourteen song live performance that came with a disc of the same show. Now, Michael...or whoever had the bright idea to put this release together...is diggin' deep in the MSG vault to bring us a Tokyo show from 1997. I know...you're probably thinkin' that it's just another live show, it's no big deal, right? Wrong. This live performance features a total of 30 tunes from Michael Schenker's legendary career. The Scorpions, UFO, MSG...there's even a Contraband tune thrown into the mix. On top of that, there's a ten song bootleg performance from 2000 that was filmed in Japan. Of course, being a bootleg, it's bootleg quality. But, how many artists would actually put something out like that. It's something nice to have on an official release. Too bad there's not a lot of other people who do this. People dig this stuff...that's why there's a bootleg scene and, by including this performance on this release, it's kind of a tip of the hat to those people who do what they can to capture their favorite band in a moment of glory. On top of that, there's a rather in depth interview with Michael Schenker that's worth the price of admission alone. You can't go wrong with this release. After all, here's a guy who doesn't have to prove anything to anybody. He's a legend in the world of music and his place in the history book is secure and, even so, he's still willing to go that extra mile for the people who have supported him all these years. You've gotta respect that...I know I certainly do. Whoever had a hand in putting this release together and getting it out to the public...I salute you...job well done!
