Winged Serpent Master Interview

August/September 03

Winged Serpent Master is 19 year old Adhab Al-Farhan (a k a Lord Nefarious). Born in Manila, Philippines, on May 26, 1983 to a Filipina mother and a Kuwaiti father. Winged Serpent Master was formed in late 1999 in Arlington, Virginia and self-released its full length debut "Enemy of God" on December of 2000. Winged Serpent Master's music styles are mixtures of black, death, thrash, and dark metal. Its new album is called "Serpent Sigil". The overall concept of the album is about revenge, destruction, and death.

At age 14, while in Gardena, California, Adhab became involved in the music scene. Beginning with the metal scene then later on to both metal and electronic scenes. He has done a metal fanzine called Chaos Underground that eventually helped him learn about self promotion by seeing how bands and record labels present themselves professionally. He has done several projects, from metal to electronics. His projects include Inner Decay (industrial death metal), Metanemfrost (industrial dark ambient/noise), Savage Primate Target (industrial/digital hardcore) and The Opioid (idm/experimental electronics). Each has its own sound and image. Adhab also has music publishing agreements with Nakatz Musikverlag (Germany) and Scene Stealer/Goodnight Kiss Music Publishing (U.S.A.) as well as a release on The Rectrix Records ("The Obsolete View" 3-way split CD featuring his project, Metanemfrost, along with other artists, The Hollowing, and Aere Aeturnus). Winged Serpent Master's aim is to produce extreme music for the new extreme generation.

Fill us in the Winged Serpent Master Project & how it all came about?

I've always wanted to be in a band but since most teenagers these days are influenced by hip hop and nu-metal, I could not find anyone that has the same tastes and goals as mines, so I went on to form Winged Serpent Master, as a one-man band. At the time of its formation I was only 16 or 17 years old. I just recently turned 20 this year (2003).

In your own words describe your sty le, sound & influences?

My music styles are mixtures of black, death, thrash, and dark metal. I don't really have any influences but I do listen to good music. My sound is not very easy to compare with any other bands or artists, it's very original sounding, a critic once said.

Are there any plans in the near or distant future for putting together a backing band for live shows ?

I've thought of it. Who knows, maybe it could happen in the near future. I also have plans of joining other bands or maybe form a full band with the right line-up of dedicated musicians.

Where & what studio did the production take place of Winged Serpent Master?

Metalliferous Studios. It's my own studio. I do everything 100%. I don't use any computers or softwares, I only used hardware equipments and digital gears for easy editing.

I understand you have done several other projects from metal to electronics ? Are these still available?

Most of my electronic projects are newly formed. The Rectrix Records released "The Obsolete View" 3-way split CD featuring my dark ambient/electronic project METANEMFROST (plus 2 other artists: HOLLOWING, and AERE AETERNUS). You can purchase it from Projekt Records (www.projekt.com), Latex Records (www.latexrecords.com) or through my website at www.expage.com/wingedserpentmaster It's also available through various mail-order companies as well as The Rectrix Records (www.therectrix.com)

How did your publishing agreements with Nakatz Musikverlag (Germany) ect come about ?

The company saw my contact info. in the well known German magazine, ROCK HARD. They contacted several bands and I got in touch with them and they were interested in listening to my recordings so I sent them a package and they offered me a publishing contract. They are currently shopping my recordings to various European metal record labels.

What is the current scene like in your local area ?

I don't really pay attention to local scenes especially in my area, I think it's non existant especially the metal genre. I concentrate on working on my music and paying close attention to other territories where extreme music is more appr eciated (like the European and Asian countries).

What are your long & short term goals as far as touring, recording, writeing ect ?

I want to keep on recording as long as I live. I'd like to record and produce other bands and artists in the future as well. I've thought of touring and I'm sure touring is fun. I can't wait!

What would you say is your biggest gripe about the music industry?

The music industry needs more real artists instead of manufactured ones. I hope the industry gets better soon. I know there's a dozen new independent record labels starting out and I hope they will become successful and destroy all the major record companies. I can't wait to see its demise!

Has there been any label interest ?

Yeah. More than a dozen actually. Most are really big independent record labels. No contracts have been offered yet but as long as there's interests, I feel alright. Latex Records is talking to me about releasing a full length METANEMFROST album. Visit their website for more info. about me and my project. www.latexrecords.com Click on "artists" and please purchase "The Obsolete View" CD from them or through my website.
