The grating screams, the classical guitar touches, ravaging drum
blasts? "Spiritual Eclipse snakes their way through each movement
taking the listener deep into the depths?. The evolution of the
force known as Spiritual Eclipse began in the summer of 1995 as
Ballisticon in the arid deserts of Southern California by founding
members, Abraham and Ivor. After only a few months in San Jose, CA,
Alvaro joined the duo in the Fall of 1999 and took over bass mauling
and intense stage antics, while Abraham stepped up to the mic and
took over vocal duties, as well as wielding the guitar. The new
formation stuck and writing began for their four-song demo
?Amaranth?. The recording was done at Five Records studio in San
Jose, CA and mastered at Final Mix studio in Campbell, CA.
?Amaranth? was released in the Spring of 2001. Brian Schulte, a
talented bassist from the Santa Cruz area, joined SE in July 2001.
Brian brings a renewed sense of energy to the band and will no doubt
help SE achieve a new level of musical mayhem! SE is set to enter
the studio to record their follow up to ?Amaranth? in the Summer of
2002. SE plays a death- driven, black tinged form of music inspired
by such bands as Dissection, Abigor, Opeth & Morbid Angel to name a
few. In the short amount of time that SE has been on the live
circuit, they have continuously progressed, faster, tighter,
smoother, and more extreme. Their assault on the Underground Metal
scene has been well received by a steadily growing fan base. Live
performances are essential weapons in SE's arsenal to broaden their
reach. A live show is a must to capture what Spiritual Eclipse does
best!
BallBuster: Introduce your current line-up to our readers?
Right now our lineup is Abe
Souza on vocals and guitar, Brian Schulte on bass guitar, and myself
(Ivor Giraldo) on drums/percussion.
BB: How long has the group been in existance?
The actual band has been
together 2.5 years, although Abe and I have been playing together on
and
off since '95/'96.
BB: In your own words describe your band's sound
& influences?
The sound of our
band is a mixture of all types of metal, we range from black/death
metal, to speed metal......to just plain ol' metal! Tempo changes is
something we really focus on. We also try to focus on dynamics by using
clean guitar harmonies with slower, more laid back drum beats, and
incorporating other sounds into our music. We try not to stick to any
one style otherwise we would get bored pretty fast, diversity is the
key
to this band.
As for our influences;
Abe is a big black metal fan: Opeth, Sorhin, Kult of Azazel, Absu,
etc.,
but then he'll listen to Depeche Mode and the Moody blues.
Brian listens to: Manowar, King Diamond-Fate, Maiden, Priest, etc.
Ivor listens to: Maiden, Death, Arch Enemy, The Haunted, also non metal
stuff, Tea Party, Lagwagon, The Accused, etc.
BB:Name
some bands in which you've shared the stage & opened?
Maladiction, Impaled, Amon Amarth, Psypheria, those are the bigger
names
that we have shared the stage with.
BB: Where & what studio did the production take
place of your current release?
The studio we recorded at was in San Jose, CA-Five Records, and we
mastered and Final Mix in Campbell, CA.
BB: What is the current scene like in your local
area & how does Shadowcaster fit in?
The current scene in the Bay Area is pretty good, there has been a
steady flow of metal shows so we have had some good turnouts at our
shows. We fit in fairly well, although I honestly have to say I haven't
heard another band like us around here. Not to say that we are superior
or anything of the like, I guess we are coming from a different angle
but still manage to fit in with the local scene.
BB: What's the bands long & short term goals
as far as touring, recording, writing ect ?
As for SE's goals, we would love to tour, that would be awesome! We
are going to start recording our 2nd disc here in March, it will have a
total of 5 songs clocking in at about 30 minutes or so? We are always
trying to write new material, that's the thing that is cool about our
band, we all write and contribute. I am a fan of the guitar and I try
to
come up with simple riffs and get Abe to embellish them, so it's a very
balanced atmosphere in the studio. Brian has brought a lot of new ideas
to the band and I think that has really re-energized Abe and myself, so
that was a good move to get him in the band.
BB: What would you say is your biggest gripe
about the music industry?
My biggest gripe about the music industry, hmmmmmmmm? I would have to
say it's the lack of support in the Metal scene. It seems to be a taboo
topic to discuss metal bands, and with a shitty channel like eMpTV
dominating with all their shitty music, it rules out the possibility of
any attention being turned on the metal community. But I feel there
will
be a resurgence because people will want music with feeling/value, not
that sugar coated shit that's everywhere now. Those bands are here
today, gone today, rock/metal has been around for years, it never goes
away you have bands like Maiden that have been around for 20+ years,
that's what real bands are made of. I think the tables will turn and
the
metal scene will get the attention it deserves, where there are actual
musicians who work their asses off, not program and loop patterns! We
shall see.......
BB: Has there been any label interest ?
No, unfortunately, we are trying, but we understand that a label
probably wants to see commitment and progression, so hopefully our next
cd will generate some buzz with the metal labels.
BB: Anything you wish to ad?
Look for our new disc by the end of summer '02!!! Check out our site:
